Collecting Q&A: Removing Musty Cellar Odors

Q: I have been using a 300-bottle chest for about 10 years to store my wine. During the past few months, I've noticed a musty odor when I open the door. Any suggestions on how to remedy this? --Jerome Rosenberg

A: You might start by placing a container of baking soda in your unit. If that doesn't work, another alternative is removing the bottles, wiping off any mold that may have accumulated on them and the walls of your unit. If the odor persists, you might try cleaning the walls with a mild, unscented detergent. I would only use bleach as the cleanser of last resort. Instead whip up some baking soda paste (three parts baking soda, one part water).
