Collecting Q&A: Variations on Tax Stamp Placement

Q: I recently purchased an expensive bottle of 1994 Quinta Do Noval Nacional from a New Jersey wine store. The tax stamp is on top of the cork foil instead of underneath it. I am concerned that the bottle has been altered and the contents are not what I expected to purchase. All my other bottles of Port and those pictured in Wine Spectator have the stamp underneath the foil.--Steve

A: There may be variations on the placement of the tax stamp, but your concerns are natural. Hopefully, your retailer will give you evidence that will allay your concern. If not, you can ask the shop to exchange this Quinta Do Noval Nacional 1994 for another one that conforms to the norm, or give you a refund.
