Health Q&A: Alcohol and Medication
Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008
Q: I notice many medications warn against taking them with alcohol. If I enjoy wine and its health benefits, what should I do?
A: You are right to check on this, as some medications such as antibiotics, painkillers and sleeping pills interact with alcohol. You may not have to avoid wine, but it is important to tell your doctor how much you drink and keep to that same amount every day so that he or she can adjust your drug dosage to match your drinking habits. Be sure to mention any over-the-counter medications you are taking in your discussion with your doctor. The Mayo Clinic warns that alcohol and aspirin, when taken in combination, can increase your risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, and alcohol and acetaminophen in combination can increase your risk of liver damage.
