95-point Bordeaux selling for less than $100

The average auction price for a bottle of 2005 Bordeaux that scored in the classic range on the Wine Spectator scale (95 to 100 points) is $1,016. Value hunters, however, should know that there’s plenty of top-rated Bordeaux that can be had for much less. Take the Château Calon-Ségur 2003 (95 points), for example. It averaged $88 per bottle at auction in the first half of 2008, down 16 percent from its release price of $105.
Occasional price disparities can result in even better values. In the first half of 2008, the Calon-Ségur ’03 ranged from a high of $130 per bottle at Hart Davis Hart to a low of just $65 per bottle at Zachys New York.
On Saturday, September 13, NYWinesChristie’s is offering six bottles of Calon-Ségur 2003 (lot 207) with an estimate of $350 to $500 per lot. If the hammer falls at the low end, the lot would represent very good value, roughly 18 percent below Calon’s current auction average (inclusive of the 20 percent buyer’s premium). At the high end, however, the aggregate price would exceed the 2003’s present value by 13 percent.
| This data comes from the Wine Spectator Auction Index, a composite of average prices for wines sold at commercial auctions. This chart shows the high, low and mean auction prices of Calon-Ségur 2003 from the 1st quarter of 2007 to the second quarter of 2008. |
