Last Night's Observations
Posted: 10:06 AM ET, 04/30/08
I was at the Grand Tour tasting in New York last night, and I thought it was fabulous, with lots of interesting wines and cool wine people. It’s a good chance to hang and taste. If you haven’t gone to a Grand Tour before, it’s worth going. Read more

No Pfalz Start for this German Pinot Noir
Posted: 05:51 PM ET, 04/29/08
I’m not as surprised as I used to be when I encounter a new (to me) Pinot Noir from an area not known for this varietal. I once scoffed at many from California, Oregon and New Zealand, but no more.
So when I was recently poured a glass of 2004 Pinot that was dark colored, rich and layered, with spicy floral wild berry, fresh earth and savory herb flavors, it showed enough of a mix of flavors to make me think Carneros or Santa Cruz Mountains. Read more

Heavy Music, Subtle Wines
Posted: 05:24 PM ET, 04/28/08
I had dinner the other night at one of my favorite places on earth, the courtyard of Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. The ambiance is amazing when you're sitting outside with the chateau facade in the background and surrounded by the lush green of the garden. Read more

A Frosty Surprise Start for 2008
Posted: 04:17 PM ET, 04/28/08
No one who farms grapes for a living is happy with recent spring frosts throughout California, which have been widespread and devastating by most accounts, extending from Anderson Valley in Mendocino to Santa Barbara in the south. Some vineyards may lose up to half their crop. Read more

A Wine for an Oyster
Posted: 11:44 AM ET, 04/28/08
The day dawned gray and chill, but by the time I steered my car up the Great Highway along San Francisco's ocean coast to the Cliff House, the sun was shining brightly. I took that as a good sign for this year's Pacific Coast Oyster Wine competition, now in its 14th year. Read more

Rheingau Days
Posted: 11:21 AM ET, 04/28/08
I’m in Germany, the Rheingau, to be exact.
I’m supposedly on vacation, but the real reason I'm here is an invitation to a wonderful tasting of older Rheingau wines from every decade of the 20th century. It’s also an excuse to visit some German friends living near Frankfurt that I have not seen in several years. Read more

A Vertical of Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d'Or
Posted: 06:46 PM ET, 04/25/08
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to taste every vintage of Nicolas Feuillatte's Cuvée Palmes d'Or. There were eight in all ranging from the recently released 1998 to the debut 1985. Presenting the vintages was Jean-Pierre Vincent, the only chef de cave at Feuillatte since the brand's creation by Nicolas Feuillatte in 1976. Read more

Something Enticing in Sicily
Posted: 03:32 PM ET, 04/25/08
My girlfriend was not happy. She was sitting next to me yesterday while I was looking at something on the Internet when an e-mail arrived on my MacBook Air. The subject line read: “Hotties from Sicily.”
“What’s this?” she said, with a slightly perturbed smile, and then smacked me on the shoulder. Read more

Guilt-Free Pleasures of Moscato d'Asti
Posted: 02:31 PM ET, 04/25/08
I am not ashamed to admit it. I like sweet, fruity dessert wines, and none better than Moscato d'Asti. To me, the easy-to-drink, light, fragrant, delicately carbonated wine from the Piemonte region of Italy makes the perfect finisher for so many meals. Read more

“Mommy, can I have this piece of chocolate from last night?”
It’s 6:30 in the morning and my eldest daughter has discovered the chocolate left by housekeeping from the night before. She missed it last night of course, as we had to carry her back to the room, comatose at 8 p. Read more
