Exploring New Domaines

On each of my visits to Burgundy I try to schedule appointments with domaines or houses that I have not previously visited. On one day of my most recent trip there were three such estates on my itinerary: Nicolas Rossignol in Volnay, Etienne Sauzet in Puligny-Montrachet and Domaine de Courcel in Pommard. Read more

Virtual RedHeads

It would be interesting to know how many new wineries start out by making and bottling their wines in somebody else's winery. My guess is maybe one-third of all new wineries, based on a cursory survey of the fresh labels I've tasted in the past couple of years. Read more

Garajistas, Amigos y Amor en Mexico

Some countries still remain off the wine radar screen for most people, even though they may be making some awesome wines. One that comes to mind is Israel. What a place! Some winemakers there are making some heartfelt, soulful wines. I still dream about a trip I made there in September 2006 with my wine-collecting friend Josh Latner, and we were blown away by the quality of a number of reds and whites we tasted. Read more

Help Wanted: What's Fair with Restaurant Wine Pricing

I’m packing my fly rod for a weekend of steelhead fishing in the rivers north of Eureka, but not before offering to help an old friend with his new restaurant wine list.

And since he’s wrestling with a concept that I’m sure would delight most of you, I thought I’d seek your input, which in turn we can share with him. Read more

Blasts from the Past

The outstanding Oakland restaurant Oliveto has started offering a special collection of older Italian wines, even serving some by the glass. The prices, eminently fair for wines from the mid-1990s and before, make it possible to drink 12-, 15-, even 25-year-old Barolos, Barbarescos and Brunellos sometimes for less than current vintages. Two Pioneers with Different Styles

We lost two pioneers of the California wine industry this past week. They were about as opposite as they could be, but they shared a dream.

Peter Newton built one of Napa’s architectural icons in Sterling Vineyards, then sold it and started another winery, Newton. Read more

The Rarity—and Importance—of Tasting DRC

I just finished reading Bruce Sanderson’s notes on the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti tasting. I’m glad that the domaine is showing its wines and envious that Bruce has tasted the wines twice.

Like most Burgundy lovers, DRC tasting opportunities and drinking experiences are not to be missed. Read more

The Indiana Jones in All of Us

Where’s the strangest place you have ever found a very good cellar? I knew a guy about 20 years ago who spent a lot of his free time during the war in Vietnam discovering old wine cellars in hotels full of great bottles of Bordeaux from the 1950s and 1960s. Read more

Making Wine Show Different Faces

Chef Daniel Patterson deserves applause for the food he made for the Washington wines at the dinner I organized last week.(See Part I of this blog for what the dinner was all about, and my comments on the wines I plucked from my cellar.) His series of nine dishes for the six wines not only shone on their own, but different dishes made the same wine show unexpected strengths. Read more

Sneak Preview of the 2005 Rubicon

I had a sneak preview of the 2005 Rubicon last week and this should be one of the greatest wines from this storied Napa Valley estate.

Owner Francis Ford Coppola is obsessed with making Rubicon one of Napa's first-growths, and he has the vineyard and winemaking talent to do so. Read more
