Day 3: More Than Just Cornas
Posted: 05:52 PM ET, 11/01/07
If you think Cornas is a sleepy town, try Mauves. That is, if you don’t miss the quick turn off of the RN 86 to find it—it comes and goes quickly.
Despite its diminutive size, several top-notch cellars are in the town, including Bernard Gripa’s. Read more

A Few Parting Thoughts on the Wine Experience
Posted: 01:25 PM ET, 11/01/07
Of all the comments and exchanges I had with readers at the New York Wine Experience, these three surprised me most.
One reader approached me at one of the Grand Tastings to complain about ratings—not low ones, and not high ones, but ones that weren’t high enough. Read more

The Flip Side of Restaurant Wine Service in NYC
Posted: 11:37 AM ET, 11/01/07
A couple of days after the BLT Steak wine debacle, I went to Sunday lunch with some friends at Union Square Café in New York City. I used to go there all the time in the early 1990s, but I had not been back in years. I heard that they had a good Italian wine list, doing special verticals of different producers, so I wanted to check it out. Read more

My Top 10 Wine Gadgets
Posted: 04:45 PM ET, 10/31/07
Aside from a corkscrew, the two wine accoutrements I use almost as frequently are a decanter, for warming up and aerating chilled wines, and a funnel, which I use to return the wine to its vessel.
Which started me thinking about the essential wine gadgets every wine lover must have, and thanks to my tasting staff, here’s a list of things we use regularly and think you’ll find handy too. Read more

Day 2: More Cornas
Posted: 12:15 PM ET, 10/31/07
Cornas is a fascinating little appellation. At 110 hectares it’s smaller than Hermitage, and has long lived in the shadow of the more famous hill across the river. But there’s a sea change going on now, with a new generation of vignerons producing some exciting wines. Read more

Harvest and Halloween Rites
Posted: 06:35 PM ET, 10/30/07
We're just about to put the last of the grapes to bed. It was a great year for us. The successes far outweighed the disappointments. We usually have some form of harvest/Halloween dinner to celebrate, and after a few drinks, I try to convince winemaker Eric Glomski to tell a little story. Read more

The Novelty of Classic Wines
Posted: 05:37 PM ET, 10/30/07
The Wine Experience is always great, but a lot of the action also occurs after the event during the dinner hour, when the thousands of participants invade some of the best restaurants in New York City.
I had interesting experience at BLT Steak last Friday night. Read more

Day 1: Some New Faces in Cornas
Posted: 02:35 PM ET, 10/30/07
A trouble-free flight landed 30 minutes early, making my normally tight connection to the TGV that much easier. After catching some Z’s on the train down to Valence, I arrived a little before noon at Maison Pic, which seems to be riding high after finally regaining its long lost third Michelin star (and a well-deserved one). Justice Is Blind
Posted: 08:38 PM ET, 10/29/07
Secretly, I breathed a sigh of relief Saturday after my fellow Wine Spectator taster-editors and I concluded a blind tasting in front of 1,200 of our closest friends at the New York Wine Experience. I wiped my brow because no one put us on the spot and demanded we identify the wines in the tasting. Read more

Is Bigger Better?
Posted: 05:11 PM ET, 10/29/07
I’m bummed. The wine I chose for our editor‘s blind tasting at this past weekend’s New York Wine Experience was the least favorite among the audience.
I feel badly, not for myself, but for Nicolas Rossignol, the talented winemaker who generously donated his Volnay-Santenots 2005 for the seminar. Read more
