A Sit Down with Concha y Toro...
Posted: 09:08 AM ET, May 26, 2006
Concha y Toro is big – millions of cases big. But the winery is also committed to quality. Its Casa Concha line offers terrific value, while its higher-end wines are impressive.
I sat down with one of the family owners, Isabel Guilisasti, and one of the winemakers, Ignacio Recabarren. Read more
Great Wine With Simple Food

This past Saturday night in Myrtle Beach, my buddies and I were in the middle of a crazy golf trip. We’d just played four rounds of golf in two days (we'd go on to play a fifth the next day) under a bright sun, interrupted by a half day of cold rain and wind (which we played through). Read more
A Sit Down with Thierry Germain...
Posted: 09:00 AM ET, May 19, 2006
I met with Thierry Germain this week, who is on his first-ever trip to the U.S. Germain, 38, has turned his Domaine des Roches Neuves, located in Saumur-Champigny, into a benchmark estate for Loire Valley reds.
Though his family has a long history in Bordeaux, Germain struck out on his own and bought an existing property in the Loire Valley in 1991. Read more
Huët 101
Posted: 08:15 AM ET, May 17, 2006
Wine geeks and insiders know the Vouvrays of S.A. Huët well. Alas, limited distribution, combined with the under-the-radar profile of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, means they are often overlooked by the general wine loving public. A shame, as this is one of the Loire’s top producers of both dry and sweet Chenin Blanc. Read more
A Cold War in the Wine World
Posted: 01:36 PM ET, May 12, 2006
I recently read a story by Stephen Yafa on The San Francisco Chronicle website. The story was an interesting interview with four San Francisco-based sommeliers and their opinions on how to order wine in a restaurant. It’s a topic that’s covered all the time – demystifying wine for the average wine lover – and one that can’t be addressed often enough. Read more
A Sit Down with Achával-Ferrer...
Posted: 11:03 AM ET, May 11, 2006
The other day I sat down with Santiago Achával, owner of Argentina’s Achával-Ferrer, to taste a few samples of his 2005s. The wines are settling in tanks and are slated for bottling in the coming weeks.
I first wrote about Achával-Ferrer when the winery debuted several years ago and have eagerly watched its progress. Read more
"Tip Me. I Poured The Damn Wine!"
Posted: 12:31 AM ET, May 07, 2006
What a coincidence, that with all the back and forth on tipping on wine, that I would have a so-so wine experience at dinner this week.
Normally my wife and I (both of us have worked in the restaurant industry previously) always tip 20 percent on food and wine (pre-tax). Read more
A Small Fish In The Big Corporate Pond...

Running a winery isn’t easy, especially when quality is your goal. It’s even more difficult coming in mid-stream and trying to effect change at a winery with a lackluster history. That’s the mountain that Juan Marco, 34, is attempting to climb at Argentina’s Navarro Correas. Read more
My Wine Draft ...
Posted: 01:31 PM ET, May 02, 2006
With the NFL draft a slowly fading memory (I’m still trying to figure out why my Jets drafted down with Chad Jackson and LenDale White still on the board) I thought I’d try my hand at a “wine draft.”
I gave myself ten picks to base a cellar on right now (figuring on a case of each wine, and an unlimited budget--thanks, Marvin!). Read more
A Winemaker in Charge of PR...

Winemaker Susana Balbo (who along with her husband, viticulturalist Pedro Marchesvky, owns Dominio del Plata in Argentina) has taken over as president of Wines of Argentina, the trade organization which handles public relations for Argentine wineries. Read more
