All Over the Map

First, a confession. I love maps. The first extra application I installed on my handheld PDA was Google Maps. I also drive this magazine's art department nuts with my corrections for maps we publish, as in, "No, this dot should be about 1/8 inch to the right, and just a tad down. Read more

Thanks for the Wines

The phone rang in the next room. I put down the bottle of wine I was pondering in my wine cellar, and rushed to get the call. My friend Leonard wanted to know what time to arrive on Thanksgiving. Saturday's Los Angeles Times contained a complete list of the star winners, the accuracy confirmed by a rueful company representative. Read more

• A new pizzeria called Gialina opened in my neighborhood in San Francisco, making a crisp, Neapolitan style. Read more

Oregon Under the Weather

The rains started on Friday, September 28. I was tasting wine with Luisa Ponzi at her family's winery outside Portland, Ore. when a series of showers dampened her spirits. She admitted to being nervous.

"There are a lot of grapes still out there," she murmured. Read more
