Perfect with Blemishes and All

It’s the perfect imperfect wine – 1947 Cheval Blanc. I am sure most of you have heard about this legendary red. It’s ageless. It’s also priceless. And it’s also probably the most counterfeited wine of them all.

Yet I had a perfect bottle of the wine about a week ago in Los Angeles, during a vertical tasting of the great St. Read more

The Novelty of Classic Wines

The Wine Experience is always great, but a lot of the action also occurs after the event during the dinner hour, when the thousands of participants invade some of the best restaurants in New York City.

I had interesting experience at BLT Steak last Friday night. Read more

Rush and Barolo in Milano

I went last night to the Bulgari Hotel in Milan with my children, Jack and Isabel, for dinner with Geddy Lee and Charlene and Alex Lifeson, and their friend Andy (whose surname I didn't catch). The band Rush is in Milan, doing a concert as they are near the end of a successful tour in Europe. Read more

Aldo's Big Bottle Orchestra

I went up to Piedmont over the weekend and stopped in to see Aldo Conterno, one of the great Barolo masters. His wines have such refinement and delicacy, yet they have structure and richness to age for decades.  His single vineyard Barolos from the area of Bussia near the town of Monforte d¹Alba are a legend: Cicala and  Colonnello. The New Olive Oil Has Arrived

Just got back from lunch with Roberto Guldener of Terrabianca, the well-known wine estate in Chianti Classico. You probably know some of his wines, such as the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend, Campaccio, or the Cab and Merlot, Ceppate.

We spoke about his wines that are currently on the market, which I was slightly less impressed with than I had been in the past. Read more

Tasting a New Brunello from Luce della Vite

I drank the first bottle ever of Luce Brunello last night in a restaurant in Montevarchi near my house in Tuscany. It's a brand-new wine from the Frescobaldi family, who have been making a Super Tuscan wine at the Luce della Vite estate in Montalcino since 1993. Read more

Sunday Sacrifice Pays Off in Florence

I didn't eat all day yesterday. I was in Yorkshire visiting my children, and I knew I would be coming back to Italy in the evening. So, nothing to eat. Niente. Nada. Only water.

I arrived in Pisa from Leeds on Jet Glue, I mean Jet2. Read more

A 1997 Barolo Business Dinner with the Editors

Harvey Steiman's blog on the dinner the other night at Babbo in New York City was right on. He nailed the food and wine experience. In fact, my mouth is still watering thinking about the dinner and wines. And the Babbo kitchen really paired the food to the wine in a near perfect way. Read more

Aah, Mexico!

I was in Mexico over the weekend; first Tijuana, and then Mexico City. I am a huge fan of Mexico. I have a number of very close friends from there, and I have been going there regularly since my grandfather started taking me fishing near Guaymas when I was a young boy. Read more

Deep Blue in Downtown LA

I went last night to a very cool restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. Blue Velvet has a hip Miami meets Tokyo vibe, with its sleek modern design, outdoor seating and swimming pool. The girl in the bikini who was swimming in front of us during the first course didn’t hurt the ambiance either. Read more

Well-Crafted Restaurant in Los Angeles

Ingredients are everything when it comes to food, especially in restaurants. This may sound strange coming from someone born and raised in Los Angeles, where it’s more about the social scene and image of a restaurant than anything else. But I've been away a long time in Europe, and I have come to appreciate what’s on the plate, both at home and out. Read more
