Network Administrator

M. Shanken Communications, Inc., publisher of Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado, Food Arts, Market Watch, and Impact magazines, is seeking an experienced professional to fill a Network Administrator position in our New York City office:

Position Summary:
The Network Administrator is part of a team that supports production, back-office computing, and end user support. The Net Admin is well organized, can prioritize on the fly, and "fight fires" without losing their cool. The Net Admin is comfortable in a mixed environment of Windows, Mac, and Linux servers, with a mix of Windows and Mac desktops and laptops.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
• Provides support and administration for LAN/WAN infrastructure and connectivity, including system stability, integrity, backup, and troubleshooting • Performs hardware and software upgrades to network servers, including operating systems and applications • Monitors and responds quickly to newly identified security threats • Provides end user support, including technicians • Ability to create and write clear, complete documentation of systems and procedures • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including high degree of attention to detail and accuracy • Self-motivated and able to work independently or with a team to prevent and solve problems

Technical Skills:
• Ability to perform typical advanced server and network admin skills to include upgrades and maintenance of hardware, operating systems, TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and DHCP protocols • Must demonstrate knowledge in user admin, firewall/router configs, MS Office, Windows 2000, XP, Netware/NDPS, Linux, Unix, Apache, Cisco switches/routers, and Mac OS X • Experience with HP Jet Direct Printing • Experience with cabling systems, hubs and routers

Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree preferred
• 3+ yrs overall experience preferred including:
• 3+ yrs experience with Windows 2000 and XP operating systems in an Active Directory environment.
• 2+ yrs experience preferred supporting a Mac environment. Working knowledge of Mac OS X.
• Linux administration experience desirable.

Technical Lead

M. Shanken Communications is looking for a motivated, team-oriented technical lead to oversee and administer the systems that power our websites.

Job responsibilities would include:

  • Serve as primary point of contact on all technical issues regarding our websites
  • Oversee and coordinate a team of site developers
  • Manage the administration and maintenance of our Linux/Solaris servers and all applications on them (PHP, Vignette, Apache 2.0, Alfresco, rsync, and more)
  • Serve as liason between editorial, marketing, and technical departments
  • Assist in the coding of new applications for our websites

Qualified candidates will have more than just excellent technical skills -- this isn't a pure tech job. We're looking for someone who also knows how to build great teams, who has experience in web publishing and content management, who can communicate effectively with non-technical users, who shares our passion for wine, and who wants to be an important part of one of the world's premier websites.
