Ernest and Julio Gallo - 1983
Gallo long reigned as the world’s largest wine producer and is among the most influential. Just after Repeal, Ernest (right), now 96, and the late Julio (who died in 1993, at age 83) combined marketing genius with extraordinary winemaking skill. From their base in Modesto, Calif., they delivered immediately accessible wine to a thirsty nation on the rise. In the 1960s, their Hearty Burgundy and Mountain Chablis became America’s house wines. In the late 1970s, the modern phase of Gallo winemaking commenced when Gallo of Sonoma, their more prestigious label, debuted. Photographed in 1993.
